RESOLVE was commissioned by the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) and Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) Extractives Workgroup in 2008-2009 to map the supply chain for the three metals used in electronics: tin (solder), tantalum (capacitors and deposition targets), and cobalt (batteries and magnetic recording media). In investigating the supply chain, RESOLVE requested and reviewed purchaser and supplier codes of conduct. RESOLVE approached the work as a collaborative process, emphasizing stakeholder engagement in the design and review of mapping results. A significant outcome of the work was evidence of the value of focusing on the smelter as the “pinch point” in supply chain, supporting the design of the Conflict Free Smelter Program as a way for electronics and other industries to pursue greater supply chain traceability and better information for making responsible sourcing decisions.
