Workshop: Root-Cause Analysis

On October 17-18, 2016, representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), industry, academia, and associations attended a 2-day workshop to discuss root-cause analysis (RCA): how it’s defined and practiced in different sectors, its role in promoting food safety, and strategies for extracting maximum value and learning from the practice. Root-cause analysis was one of several discussion topics the Forum identified in previous sessions as intrinsic to achieving enhanced food safety, though it expands beyond FSMA. At this session’s end, the convened group developed short- and long-term proposals for continuing the conversation around root-cause analysis and related issues.
